As Apple Delays Plans To Use Space Saving RCC Components The IPhone 17 May Not Have A Thin Design According To A Report

In the beginning, it was rumored that Apple would upgrade the PCB materials in its iPhone 16 models in 2024.

There was a rumor that Apple would use new resin-coated copper (RCC) parts in the iPhone models to make them smaller and thinner. The revolutionary design change was originally scheduled to be implemented with the iPhone 16 family this year, but it was later postponed until the iPhone 17, which is anticipated to go into production in 2025. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known Apple analyst, has said that Apple has put off adding RCC components to future iPhone models once more. Apple's rumored decision is thought to be based on worries about fragility and durability.

Change to RCC material put on pause Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo writes in a post on X, which was previously Twitter, that Apple has deferred once more its plans to use RCC components in future iPhone models. Kuo wrote on X, "The new iPhone 17 in 2025 will not use RCC as the PCB motherboard material due to the inability to meet Apple's high-quality requirements.

The Cupertino-based company could reduce the size and thickness of the mainboard by using RCC components to replace the CCL that is currently in use. Additionally, it will likely allow the company to pack larger batteries into future iPhone models and free up space. The adoption of RCC technology may have been postponed due to concerns regarding its fragility and durability.

In the beginning, it was rumored that Apple would upgrade the PCB materials in its iPhone 16 lineup in 2024; however, this upgrade was later said to be pushed to the iPhone 17 series. Kuo does not specify whether RCC components will be included in the 2026 iPhone 18 or the 2027 iPhone 19. But Apple hasn't said anything about switching to RCC materials yet, so these latest claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

What we know so far about the iPhone 17 series The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Slim, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are said to be the four models in Apple's 2025 iPhone family. The slimmer Slim model could take the place of the Plus model. It is anticipated that the iPhone 17 family will feature a new design, improved front-facing cameras, and a Dynamic Island that is smaller. Apple's A19 Pro chip is said to power the iPhone 17 Pro models, while the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim may use an A18 or A19 chip.
