Excessive Screen Time Causing Dry Eye Disease In School Children Study Finds 

A recent study by BJ Medical College and others finds that children spending more than 3 to 3.5 hours a day on screens are at higher risk of dry eye disease. The condition affects vision and causes eye discomfort.

A recent study has found that increased screen time has caused a rise in dry eye disease among school children.

The researchers from the BJ Medical College (BJMC) in Ahmedabad, PDU Government Medical College in Rajkot and Government Medical College in Satna, said that children who use devices for more than 3 to 3.5 hours a day are at a higher risk of developing dry eye disease (DED).

Dry eye disease is a condition where the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly, leading to discomfort, redness, and vision problems.

Even an extra half hour of computer use per day can increase the likelihood of moderate to severe dry eye. Policymakers should aim to limit children's screen time to less than 3 hours a day," they wrote in the study, published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.

The research revealed that 90% of participants, 462 school children with an average age of 11, who were examined for eye-related issues in government hospitals, had mild to severe dry eye disease, which leads to blurry vision, redness of eyes and itchy or watery eyes.
The condition is linked to 8 to 10 hours of screen time from recreational, co-curricular and educational purposes.
